What (who) is ANUBIS?

Anubis, in ancient Egyptian mythology was the guardian of the Ka (the term the Egyptians used to describe the Soul). Guarding Souls is our business, so the name and the spirit behind it found substance in the modern world. Anubis is most often portrayed with the head of a dog (the breed is still around - it's called a Pharaoh Hound or Ibizan) and the body of a man. A statue of Anubis was the first object Howard Carter saw when they opened the royal tomb of Tutankhamen. One of Anubis' more esoteric tasks was to be present at the weighing of the heart. In papyrus scrolls and numerous tomb paintings he stands beside Thoth (the god of scribes) while the heart of the departed one is weighed against Ma'at (truth) usually represented as a feather. If your heart was full of bad deeds, then it would outweigh Ma'at, and ruin your chances to pass into the after-life.

This photograph of a tomb wall painting
depicts a scene from the Egyptian Book of the Dead. If you were
really rich when you died, you didn't have to memorize all the important
incantations that would lead you safely back to rebirth.
With enough money, you could have some nice artist
paint the relevant verses on the wall of your tomb.
Now where did I leave my torch?
